Household energy storage refers to the storage of electricity locally by household energy storage devices for future use. Electrochemical energy storage products, also known as battery energy storage systems (BESS), are based on rechargeable batteries, usually lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries, controlled by computers and equipped with intelligent software to handle charging and discharging cycles.
1、 Advantages of Home Energy Storage
1. Overcoming power grid losses: due to transmission losses in the power grid, power transmission from power stations to Center of population is inherently inefficient, especially in power intensive urban agglomerations where it is difficult to locate power stations. By allowing a larger proportion of on-site power generation to be consumed on site rather than output to the energy grid, household energy storage devices can reduce the inefficiency of grid transportation.
2. Energy grid support
Home energy storage devices, when connected to servers through the internet, can theoretically be ordered to provide very short-term services for the energy network:-
(1) Reduce demand pressure in peak period - provide short-term demand response during peak demand period, and reduce the demand for inefficient operation of short-term power generation assets such as Diesel generator.
(2) Frequency correction - Provides ultra short term correction to maintain the power frequency within the required tolerance range of the regulator (e.g. 50Hz or 60Hz+/- n%).
3. Reduce dependence on fossil fuels
Due to the efficiency mentioned above and their increased ability to consume solar energy on-site, these devices reduce the electricity generated from the use of fossil fuels (i.e. natural gas, coal, oil, and diesel).
2、 Disadvantages of household energy storage
Environmental impact of batteries: Early home storage systems typically used lead-acid batteries, which have the advantage of being highly recyclable -99% of lead-acid batteries in the United States are recyclable. However, the lead and sulfuric acid electrolytes in lead-acid batteries pose great harm to the environment. In addition, lead-acid batteries have a short service life and are gradually being replaced by lithium-ion batteries.
However, although lithium-ion batteries have a long service life, they cannot be recycled (or are difficult to achieve), and some lithium-ion batteries contain nickel, cadmium, and manganese, which can also cause environmental pollution.
