How to choose energy storage batteries for household storage solutions?

Nowadays, with the increase of electricity price caused by the Energy crisis and the decrease of income caused by the adjustment of photovoltaic power generation subsidies, more and more families are choosing to install energy storage systems. As the foundation of energy storage systems, how to choose a suitable battery has become a concern for many users.


There are many types of energy storage batteries in the market, and each type of battery has differences in capacity, lifespan, safety, and price. Different household load conditions, usage environments, application scenarios, and other factors can also affect the selection of batteries.



Battery type

At present, mainstream household energy storage batteries can be divided into two categories: lithium batteries and lead-acid batteries. Lithium batteries occupy the vast majority of the market, while lead-acid batteries are gradually fading out of the historical stage.


Lithium batteries mainly include Lithium iron phosphate, ternary lithium and Lithium titanate. Lithium iron phosphate battery accounts for more than 90% of the total amount of household lithium storage batteries. Its energy density is high, about 160Wh/kg, and its cycle life is up to 6000-8000 times. It has stable structure and low potential safety hazards, and is widely welcomed by the public; Compared with Lithium iron phosphate battery, the ternary lithium battery has higher energy density, more than 200Wh/kg, and higher power density, but its structure is relatively unstable, which is prone to Thermal runaway, with only about 2000 cycles and more expensive price; Lithium-titanate battery is a kind of high-performance lithium battery, with energy density between ternary lithium and Lithium iron phosphate, stable structure, lower safety hazards, and cycle times up to 15000-20000, but the cost is high and the price is very expensive.


Lead acid batteries are also divided into traditional lead acid batteries and colloidal batteries. Traditional lead-acid batteries have the lowest cost and the cheapest price, but their energy density is very low, only 30-60Wh/kg, and their cycle life is only 200-300 times, and there are also certain safety hazards; Compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, colloidal batteries have a significant improvement in energy density, reaching approximately 100Wh/kg, with a cycle life of 800-1500 cycles, and are also safer to use.


To sum up, if families need to install long-term energy storage systems, Lithium iron phosphate battery and gel battery are better choices. Lithium iron phosphate battery is more expensive than gel battery, but its cycle life can be more than 10 years, and the overall use cost will be lower; If households are more sensitive to price, gel batteries are also a good choice. Their price is 20-30% lower than lithium batteries, and their performance is much stronger than traditional lead-acid batteries, which can meet the needs of most households; For customers who only need short-term use, traditional lead-acid batteries can be considered. Due to frequent reports of Thermal runaway accidents, ternary lithium batteries have gradually faded out of the field of household storage, while Lithium-titanate battery are expensive and generally will not be considered except for special application scenarios.


Battery system

Energy storage batteries can be divided into low voltage energy storage batteries and high voltage energy storage batteries based on the different connection methods in the circuit. This high voltage and low voltage do not refer to the numerical value of the voltage between the two, but rather to the circuit connection method of the battery in the entire system.


Low voltage energy storage batteries usually have a voltage between 48-60V, and when in use, they cannot be pressurized in series (i.e. none) between the batteries
